Colonials Win Fourth Straight Match

WASHINGTON, DC - GW's senior outside hitter combination of Ruth Lazzari and Sarah Hokom combined for 23 kills and 33 digs to lead GW past visiting Villanova, 32-30, 30-20, 30-28, in the second match of the GW Volleyball Invitational Friday at GW's Smith Center. Lafayette defeated Coppin State, 3-0, in the other opening round match earlier Friday.
GW setter Lauren Dunning contributed 34 of the Colonials 40 assists in the one-hour, 40-minute match. GW freshman Kelly Kabbes (Cary, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) continued to impress by hitting .467 with eight kills in 15 attacks while committing just one error.
The Colonials started fast in game one taking a 10-1 lead before Villanova closed the gap and tied the match at 24-24. GW then went in front 29-25 but could not close out the Wildcats as a kill by Katie Lanting tied the game at 30-30. A Lazzari kill followe by a Villanova attack error gave GW the victory, 32-30.
Game two was tied at 9-9 before GW took control and coasted to a 10-point victory. Game three was tight throughout with neither team leading by more than three points. A kill by Villanova's Dana Kabashima pulled the Wildcats to within 29-28 before Kabbes ended the match with an emphatic kill off a set by Dunning.
GW (4-0) hit .188 (49-20-154) as a team with 74 digs compared to .147 (46-24-150) and 73 digs by the Wildcats.
Villanova (0-4) was led by Adrian Semrau's 14 kills and Sam Hartwell's 18 digs.
GW plays two more matches in the Invitational beginning with Lafayette at 1:00 Saturday and Coppin State at 7:00 pm at Smith Center. Also on Saturday, Coppin State plays Villanova at 11:00 a.m. and Lafayette takes on Villanova at 5:00 p.m.
