Volleyball Laps Lafayette, 3-0

WASHINGTON, DC - GW's Sarah Hokom and Molly Law combined for 10 of the Colonials' 15 service aces as GW breezed past visiting Lafayette, 30-16, 30-19, 30-22 in a one-hour, 10-minute match Saturday afternoon at GW's Smith Center. Villanova defeated Coppin State, 3-0, in the first match earlier Saturday.

GW hit a season-high .358 (50-12-106) to control the match from start to finish in the second day of the GW Volleyball Invitational. Senior outside hitter Ruth Lazzari paced the Colonials' attack with 11 kills and tied Hokom's 11 digs for match-high honors. GW sophomore Shannon Parks was flawless with nine kills in 19 swings with no errors for a .474 hitting percentage and added five digs. Freshman Lindsey Vernand also posted an errorless hitting performance with five kills in nine attacks for a .556 percentage.

GW coach Jojit Coronel played all four of his freshmen in games two and three allowing freshman setter Kaimana Lee (Wailuku, HI/Seabury Hall) enough touches to record 19 assists as Lauren Dunning's understudy.

Lafayette (3-2) was led by Caroline Eshman's seven kills for a .429 hitting percentage and Cathy Herchenroder's 11 digs. As a team, Lafayette hit .070 (29-21-115) with 41 digs.

GW (5-0) concludes the Invitational Saturday at 7 p.m. with a match against Coppin State (0-3). Also on Saturday, Lafayette takes on Villanova at 5:00 p.m. prior to the GW-Coppin State match.
