Volleyball Suffers First Loss of Season at Virginia Tech, 3-0

Sept. 8, 2006

Final Stats

BLACKSBURG, VA -- The George Washington volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday night at Virginia Tech in the Hokie Invitational at Blacksburg, VA. VT swept the match by the scores, 30-25, 30-26, 34-32, in one hour, 40 minutes at Cassell Coliseum.

The loss snapped a six-match winning streak to open the season for the Colonials, their best start in three years. GW senior co-captain Juliene McLaughlin led all players with 18 kills and added 13 digs. She hit .316 but was the only Colonial in double-figure kills.

GW setter Kaimana Lee (Wailuku, HI) assisted on 31 of GW's 39 kills.

GW, playing its fourth straight match without injured starter Janine Brown, struggled in game one hitting -.022 with 11 kills and 12 errors while Virginia Tech combined to hit .214 (17-8-42). GW then hit .229 in both games two and three taking the host Hokies to the limit in game three before succumbing, 34-32.

With game three knotted at 30-30, the Hokies took the lead on a Katie Esbrook kill but a Tech service error tied the game at 31-31. The Colonials then got a kill by senior Kelly Kabbes to take a 32-31 lead but a pair of kills by Taylor Parrish and one by Allie Kupec put the match away.

Virginia Tech (4-3) was led by Parrish's 15 kills and .400 hitting percentage, and Sarah Munoz's 14 kills.

The match was a homecoming of sorts for first-year GW Assistant Coach and former Virginia Tech setter, Melissa Markowski. Markowski is Virginia Tech's career-leader for assists with 5,287.

GW (6-1) faces Appalachian State (4-3) Saturday at 10 a.m. before taking on Liberty (0-5) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Blacksburg. Appalachian State defeated Liberty by the scores, 30-15, 30-18, 30-24, in the opening match of the Hokie Invite earlier Friday.
