GW Volleyball Outlasts Elon, 3-2, in Five-Set Triumph
Goss and Williams Combine For 27 Kills; Colonials Visit Georgetown Wednesday
Sep 7, 2013
WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team departed the UCF Classic with a winning record after outlasting Elon in a five-set thriller on Saturday afternoon at The Venue at UCF. Set scores were 16-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 15-11.
It was the second time this weekend that the Colonials won in five sets after Friday's win over then-undefeated Stephen F. Austin.
Senior Rachael Goss and freshman Loren Williams each posted double-digit kills with Goss adding 14 digs for her second double-double performance of the weekend. Williams finished with 12 winners along with three blocks (two solo, one assist).
GW (3-3) struggled offensively in the first set before tying the match with a 25-23 win in the second. The Colonials were in danger of falling behind 2-0 in the match when faced with a 23-21 deficit late in the frame, but rattled off four straight points to tie the match at 1-1.
Elon (2-5) regained momentum in the third as the Colonials fell into an offensive slump, hitting just .029 with eight attack errors.
GW turned the tables in the fourth set, recording 14 kills against just one error (.481) and posting four blocks to once again tie the match. After being tied at 20-20, the Colonials closed on a 5-2 run to force a decisive fifth set.
The fifth set was a point-for-point battle until the score was tied at 10-10. From there, the Colonials once again applied the pressure and closed the set on a 5-1 run, including two clutch service aces from sophomore Maddy Doyle, to clinch the victory.
Doyle paced the defense with a match-high 20 digs and added three aces while the Colonials posted 11 team blocks, the second time this weekend recording double-digit rejections.
Freshman Chidima Osuchukwu, junior Gabrial Rushton and Williams each contributed two solo blocks apiece. Osuchukwu added six kills without an error while Rushton posted five kills with just one miscue.
The Colonials will make the short trip to Georgetown for a non-conference clash with the Hoyas at McDonough Arena on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
