Volleyball Wraps Friday Play By Sweeping SDSU

GRAND FORKS - The George Washington volleyball team got back in the win column with a dominant 3-0 sweep over South Dakota State in the nightcap of its Friday doubleheader at the UND Classic at the Betty Englestad Sioux Center.

GW fell in the first match of the day before putting forth its most efficient offensive effort of the young season in the sweep over the Jackrabbits on Friday night.

Match 2: GW 3, South Dakota State 0 - Box Score

  • GW swung a season-high .343 with a season-low 11 attack errors en route to a quick 3-0 sweep over South Dakota State.
  • Sophomore Jordan Young and senior Aaliya Davidson shared the team lead with 11 kills apiece.
  • GW outblocked the opposition, 5.0-3.0, with junior Alexis Lete (three block assists) leading the way.
  • The Colonials held a 44-34 advantage in digs while registering five service aces in the win.

  • GW trailed early by scores of 6-3 and 12-10 before storming back to take a 17-14 lead.
  • The Jackrabbits scored two quick points out of a timeout to pull within one point of the lead at 17-16, but GW erupted on a 7-3 run to take a commanding 24-19 lead.
  • SDSU won a point but gave away the set on the ensuing serve with an error.

    Set 2: GW 25, SDSU 21
  • SDSU started on a 3-1 run but GW rallied to tie the match at 5-5.
  • The teams traded points until a 7-7 deadlock before the Colonials registered six consecutive points to begin a dominant 11-3 run to build an 18-10 lead.
  • The Jackrabbits would not get closer than four points as GW assumed a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win.

    Set 3: GW 25, SDSU 16
  • GW was dominant in the deciding third set, hitting a match-best .393 with just two attack errors.
  • The set was tied just once, at 1-1, but the Colonials used an opening 8-2 run to create separation and never looked back en route to the win.

  • Senior Kristel Moor put down a team-high 11 kills to lead the Colonials in the first match of the day. Junior Kelsey Clark also finished in double figures with 10 kills.
  • North Dakota committed just seven attack errors in the match and swung .350 while limiting the Colonials to .161 with 17 miscues.
  • Freshman Sydney Welch paced the Colonials' back line with 13 digs.

    Set 1: North Dakota 25, GW 15
  • GW grabbed an early 2-1 lead but North Dakota erupted for a difference-making 12-1 run to build a substantial advantage en route to the win.

    Set 2: North Dakota 25, GW 19
  • The teams battled through nine ties and seven lead changes.
  • The set was the best of the match for GW's offense as the Colonials swung .314 (15k-4e-35a).
  • A kill by Clark and an attack error gave the Colonials a 14-13 lead midway though the frame but five straight points by North Dakota put them ahead, 18-14.
  • GW was able to cut the deficit to two at 19-17 but a set-closing 6-2 run by North Dakota clinched the set. Br>
