GW Volleyball Opens VCU Invitational with 3-0 Sweep of North Carolina A&T

RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Kelsey Newman recorded a match-high 14 kills and junior Katie Crosby assisted on 28 of the Colonials 33 kills as the George Washington volleyball team dominated North Carolina A&T, 3-0, in the opening match of the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational at the Siegel Center. Set scores were 25-6, 25-12, 25-15. GW (7-0) has opened the season with seven straight victories, its best start since 2003 when it rattled of 10 consecutive wins to open the season. The Colonials have not dropped a set since Aug. 27 against George Mason. The Colonials were dominant from the outset as they sprinted out to a 12-4 lead to open the match. An outstanding defensive effort held the Aggies to a -.208 attack percentage as GW forced seven errors and accumulated two blocks to take the first set 25-6. GW turned up the offensive pressure in the second set as it swung .522 with just two errors to take the set, 25-12. Newman recorded six of her 14 kills in the second frame and sophomore Jessica Burr contributed three service aces. Burr finished with five service aces for five points. The third set was the closest of the match featuring four ties and two lead changes before the Colonials pulled away 25-15. After relying primarily on defense in the first set and offense in the second, GW used a healthy combination of both in the final frame to close out the match. Newman hit a match-high .650 (14k-1e-20a) on the evening while sophomores Taylor Knox and Jamie Armstrong each contributed five kills. Crosby was the centerpiece of the attack as she assisted on 85 percent (28-for-33) of the Colonials kills to go along with two digs and one ace.
