BOISE, ID - Junior Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) pounded 10 kills and blocked six Boise State attacks in leading the Colonials volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of the host Broncos in the first round of the Boise State Invitational Friday night in Idaho. The Colonials defeated Boise State, 30-26, 30-24, 31-29, in a one-hour, 42-minute match at the BSU Pavilion. The victory was GW's sixth of the season equalling its total number of wins from last season.

The tournament marked a homecoming for junior co-captain Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) and sophomore Katie Downey (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) both from nearby Caldwell, ID. With family and friends looking on, Hokom responded with nine kills and 11 digs while Downey added five kills and a pair of block assists. Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach,CA/Huntington) contributed a team-high 14 digs in an error-filled match.

The Broncos misfired with 13 service errors while committing 35 attack errors, four ball handling errors and three reception errors resulting in 55 of GW's 91 points in the match. The Colonials' defense led to 10 of the Boise State attack errors as GW amassed 10 total blocks.

Neither team hit particularly well with GW posting a .067 percentage (37-29-119) compared to .045 for Boise State (41-35-133). The Colonials out-dug BSU, 52-46.

In the other opening-round match, Eastern Washington shocked No. 8 Utah, 30-22, 30-25, 33-31.
