Box Score

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The GW volleyball team equalled the best start in the 28-year history of the program Saturday night with a 30-22, 27-30, 30-23, 30-16 victory over host Rutgers in the final match of the Clarion Suites Classic in New Brunswick, NJ. GW also began the 1979 season with a 9-0 mark under former coach Pat Sullivan.

Seniors Lauren Dunning, Sarah Hokom and Ruth Lazzari were named to the All-Tournament team with Hokom garnering MVP honors for the second straight tournament.

The win avenged last year's loss to Rutgers which came in the championship match of the GW Volleyball Invitational at Smith Center. GW improved to 24-10 in the all-time series against its former Atlantic 10 Conference foe.

Lazzari posted a double-double with 13 kills and 20 digs while hitting .308. Hokom added 20 kills in 36 swings for a .417 hitting percentage while Dunning assisted on 51 of GW's 66 kills in the match.

As a team, GW hit .340 (66-18-141) compared to .180 (54-25-161) for Rutgers. The Colonials' defense rose to the occasion topping the Scarlet Knights in digs (66-49) and blocks (10-6.5).

Rutgers' Shayla Bush led the Scarlet Knights with 21 kills in 43 attacks for a .372 hitting percentage.

GW (9-0) goes for the school-record Tuesday night against crosstown rival Georgetown in a 7:00 p.m. match at GU's McDonough Gym.
