Volleyball Roughs Up Rider, 3-0, to Win GW Invitational

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW Volleyball team won it fifth GW Invitational title in eight years by defeating Rider, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Smith Center. GW won by the scores, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21, to claim the tournament crown.

Senior Liz Moult was sharp with a team-high 12 points while hitting .455 on 11 kills in 22 attempts with just one error. Sophomore Hannah Stuart had her second straight solid outing with 10 points on eight kills with 11 digs. Both Moult and Stuart were named to the All-Tournament Team and were joined by teammate and tourney MVP, Alyssa Valentine. The freshman setter assisted on 28 of GW's 35 kills to go with 10 digs and a block assist.

GW took control of the first set with a 10-3 burst to break a 3-3 tie and hang on for the 25-19 victory. The Colonials combined to hit .258 in the first set compared to .184 for the Broncs. Set two was also tied at 3-3 before the Colonials pulled away and built a 20-13 margin on a kill by Katie Butz. Rider then rallied to get within four at 23-19 on a kill by Katelyn Thompson but Rider committed a pair of errors to give Gw the 25-21 win.

The third set was the closest as the teams battled to a 15-15 tie before GW asserted itself as four different Colonials slammed kills to propel the home team to the 25-21 win and the tournament title.

Rider (6-3) was led by Lindsay Brant's 11 kills and 10 digs for 12 points while Amy Jeary recorded 12 digs, including hte 1,000th dig of her career in the first set of the match. The Broncs were plagued by poor serving throughout the match as they committed a total of 11 service errors.

With the victory, the Colonials improved to 2-0 all-time against the Broncs.

 

 

GW (5-2) next faces Maryland-Baltimore County next Friday at 5 pm in the West Virginia Invitational at Morgantown, WV.
