Volleyball Handles Jacksonville State, 3-0

CINCINNATI, OH -- The George Washington volleyball team broke a six-match slide by sweeping Jacksonville (AL) State, 3-0, Friday night in the State Farm Bearcat Invitational at UC's Fifth Third Arena. The Colonials outscored the Gamecocks, 30-22, 30-24, 30-28, in the 86-minute match.

GW won by keeping its hitting errors to a minimum committing just 15 for the match and hitting .211 while JSU committed 36 attacking miscues and hit just .095. The Colonials also were strong at the net blocking nine Gamecock attacks.

GW's Lindsey Vernand paced the Colonials' offense with 10 kills and hit .368 while Janine Brown hit .389 with eight kills and just one hitting error. Brown was later named to the All-Tournament Team. GW senior Abigail Hatter hit .455 with seven kills in 11 swings.

Jacksonville State (3-7) was led by Abbey Breit's 15 kills while teammate Suzi Terrell added 13 kills. Kisha West led the Gamecocks with 16 digs.

Trailing 26-25 in game three, GW scored two points on consecutive kills by Vernand before JSU knotted the game at 27-27 on a kill by Kim Halbach. GW went up by a point on a kill by McLaughlin but JSU responded with a kill by Terrell to tie the game at 28-28. After a Terrell service error game GW a 29-28 edge, the Colonials called a timeout. It worked as GW came out of the timeout and won the match on a service ace by Juliene McLaughlin.

The Colonials (3-7) will try to win their second straight match when they face George Mason Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Fairfax, VA.
