Volleyball Falls to UMBC in GW Tournament Finale

WASHINGTON -The GW Volleyball team concluded its non-conference tournament schedule on Saturday afternoon but was unable to get past visiting UMBC in a 3-0 loss to conclude the GW Tournament.

Junior Kelsey Clark and sophomore Jaimeson Lee were each named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the weekend.

Clark swung .404 over the three matches with 30 kills and 10.0 total blocks while Lee averaged 5.27 assists per set with one double-double, five service aces and 23 digs (2.09/set).

  • GW's defense started slow but was able to decrease UMBC's attack percentage in each of the three sets played.
  • The Retrievers hit .333 in the opening set, followed by .268 in the second and .190 in the third.

    Set 1: UMBC 25, GW 16
  • UMBC never trailed in the first set but did have to outlast the Colonials across five tie scores.
  • The Retrievers broke a 7-7 tie with a 5-1 run to open a 12-8 lead and maintained the advantage for the duration of the opening frame.
  • UMBC swung .333 in the first set with just two attack errors.

    Set 2: UMBC 25, GW 21

  • GW committed just four attack errors in the second set (.229) and forced seven miscues by the Retrievers.
  • GW led by three at 9-6 but a 7-2 run by UMBC put them ahead, 13-11.
  • GW battled back to knot the score at 16-16 and took a one point lead on a kill by Jordan Young.
  • The teams traded points until another kill by Young put the Colonials on top, 18-17, but a set-ending 8-3 run by UMBC clinched the set and a decisive 2-0 lead in the match.

    Set 3: UMBC 25, GW 23
  • The teams traded substantial runs in the early portion of the third set. UMBC stated with a 7-2 run that was answered by an 11-6 spurt by the Colonials which tied the score at 13-13.
  • UMBC created separation by pulling ahead, 18-15, but GW responded again with a 7-2 run to take a 22-20 lead.
  • UMBC closed on a match-clinching 5-1 spurt to earn the win.
