Volleyball Suffers First Loss to No. 17 Santa Clara, 3-0

COLUMBIA, SC - The GW volleyball team lost it first match of the season Friday to 17th-ranked Santa Clara, 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-19), at the Gamecock Invitational on the campus of the University of South Carolina. GW senior Sarah Hokom was the only Colonial in double-figure kills with 11 and added a match-high 10 digs.

After setting a school record for fastest start at 10-0, GW ran into a buzzsaw in the Broncos led by Cassie Perret who led SCU with a match-high 15 kills in the victory. SCU's Becky Potter added a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.

As a team, GW was out-hit .045 (30-25-111) to the Broncos' .308 (48-15-107). Santa Clara's blocking was evident with a pair of solos and 20 assists totalling 12 blocks compared to six total blocks for GW.

GW junior Katie Downey hit an efficient .444 with five kills in nine attacks while commiting just one error.

The Broncos (8-4) won the tournament after defeating host South Carolina, 3-2, on Thursday evening and Duke by a 3-1 score on Friday morning.

GW (10-1) attepts to get back on track Saturday when they play South Carolina at 10:00 am and Duke at 3:00 pm Saturday in the Gamecock Invitational.
