Valentine Named MVP, Butz, Whyte Named All-Tournament
Sept. 19, 2009
TOWSON, MD -- The GW Volleyball held off a pesky Towson squad to capture the Towson Invitational championship Saturday with a 3-2 victory over the host Tigers. GW won by the scores, 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-8, at the Towson Center. It marked GW's second tournament title this season after having won the season-opening DC Challenge.
Winners of five of their last six matches, the Colonials were led by senior Katie Butz and junior Leah Hill, each with 17 kills while freshman Candace Silva-Martin had a match-high 35 digs. Sophomore setter Alyssa Valentine was named the tournament's MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Butz and Lauren Whyte. Also named were Chadre Phillips (Ball State), Britney Loomis (Towson) and Penn's Lauren Martin and Madison Wojciechowski.
Towson (7-7) was led by Britney Loomis's team-high 13 kills and Stacey Niehoff's 17 digs.
The Colonials had little trouble in the first set pulling away from a 6-6 tie to take a 18-11 lead and cruise to the 25-18 victory. The second set was much tighter. Trailing by one at 21-20, GW committed a pair of critical attack errors to lose, 25-20. After three GW attack errors to begin the tird set, the Colonials rallied to tie the set at 13-13 and stayed close throughout but GW again gave away points with attack errors and fell, 25-22. Set four was the most competitive marked by three lead changes and eight ties, the last coming at 17-17 before a pair of kills by Hill gave the Colonials some breathing room at 19-17. A pair of attack errors by Towson's Amanda Halls, coupled with a pair of Butz kills and an ace by Valentine, gave GW the 25-18 win.
The fifth set was all GW as the Colonials powered their way to a commanding 11-1 lead and rolled to the 15-8 triumph. For the tournament, GW posted a 3-0 record in matches and was 9-2 in sets.
GW (8-4) next plays at La Salle on Friday, Sept. 25 in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams. Free live statistical updates are available by going to www.GWsports.com and clicking on the GameTracker link.
