Hokom Leads Volleyball to 3-0 Sweep of UMBC

PITTSBURGH, PA - The GW volleyball team swept Maryland-Baltimore County, 30-17, 30-28, 30-25, Friday afternoon in the first game of the Pittsburgh Classic at Pitt's Fitzgerald Fieldhouse. It marked GW's second victory over the Retrievers this season after defeating UMBC 3-1, in the second match of the season. The victory, GW's seventh in 11 matches, broke a two-match losing skid and surpassed the Colonials' win total of all last season.
Junior Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) exploded for a match-high 19 kills to go with 13 digs for a double-double. Teammate Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) added eight kills and a match-high 19 digs. Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington) flirted with a double-double with nine kills and nine digs while hitting .353.
The Colonials defense made the difference with 62 digs and 8.5 total blocks compared to 44 digs and three blocks for the Retrievers. GW also earned 10 points on service aces with three each by Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA/St. Mary's) and Molly Law (Denver, CO/Mullen).
UMBC's Heather Hollidge and Kristina Nall had nine kills each to lead the Retrievers.
The Pittsburgh Classic continues Saturday with GW (7-4) playing Charleston Southern at 10: 30 a.m. and the host Panthers at 7:30 p.m. It marks the first meeting between GW and Charleston Southern while Pitt owns an 8-2 record in the all-time series with the Colonials.
