Volleyball Loses in Tournament Championship at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA - The GW volleyball team placed second in it third tournament this season when it came up on the short end of a 30-22, 30-22, 30-21 score against the University of Pittsburgh Saturday night in the title match of the Pittsburgh Classic at Pitt's Fitzgerald Fieldhouse. The loss snapped a modest two-match win streak for the Colonials and dropped them to 8-5 on the season. It marked Pitt's eighth straight victory as the Panthers improved to 10-4. GW opened the season with a second-place finish in the Maryland Invitational and also was second in the GW Invitational.

Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington) posted her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs with a block solo. She was named to the all-tournament team along with Colonials setter Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA/St. Mary's) who assisted on 28 of GW's 31 kills and added 11 digs.

Junior co-captain Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) slammed a team-high 11 kills in the loss and had 10 digs. Hokom totalled 43 kills in the tournament, an average of 14.3 kills per match.

The Panthers were led by Megan Miller and Madelyn Egan, who combined for 26 kills and just four errors in 46 attempts. Cini Ullery recorded a match-high 15 digs, along with Panther freshman Megan McGrane. Pitt's Egan, Miller and McGrane were named to the all-tournament team along with GW's Vernand and Dunning, UMBC's Heather Hollidge, and Charleston Southern's Allyn Beam.

UMBC beat Charleston Southern earlier Saturday, 3-0 (31-29, 30-19, 30-27).

GW (8-5) opens Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday, Sept. 27, at defending champion Xavier in a 7:00 p.m. match at Cincinnati. The Colonials stay in Ohio for a Saturday match at regular-season champion Dayton beginning at 4:00p.m.
