West Virginia Outlasts GW, 3-2, to Capture WVU Classic

Sept. 20, 2008

Final Stats

MORGANTOWN, WV -- The GW Volleyball team lost its second five-set match of the day Saturday night to West Virginia, in the final match of the West Virginia Classic in Morgantown, WV. GW fell to the host Mountaineers by the scores, 20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 11-15 in a two-hour battle at the WVU Coliseum.

The Colonials lost all three matches in the tournament to finish fourth in the four-team event. The Mountaineers won the event with UNC Greensboro placing second ahead of third-place UMBC.

After winning the second and fourth sets to force a decisive fifth set, both teams battled to a 6-6 tie before WVU's Tammy Wolf slammed a kill followed by a GW attack error to give the Mountaineers an 8-6 lead. Jackie Yaniga spiked a kill to get GW within one but WVU's Kari Post put away another set from Bonnie West for the 9-7 advantage. Post promptly served an error to give a point back but teammates Lisa Hough and Kylie Armbruster all terminated balls to win the set and the match, 15-11.

Hill led the Colonials with 17.5 points on 17 kills and 15 digs for her second double-double of the season. Hannah Stuart added 10 kills while Abby Syverson scored 14 points on eight kills and seven blocks (1 solo, 6 assisted). Maggie Wright led all players with her career-high 34 digs.

West Virginia (5-5) was led by Wolf's 20 points on 18 kills and four block assists while Abby Norman scored 11.5 points on nine kills and four blocks.

GW (5-5) will open A-10 Conference action next weekend with a trip to Duquesne Friday in Pittsburgh, PA.
