Volleyball Drops A-10 Opener at Xavier, 3-0

CINCINNATI, OH -- GW fell to Xavier, 3-0, Friday night in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams. The Musketeers won by scores of 30-28, 30-25 and 30-19 to improve to 8-5 overall, 1-0 in the A-10 while the Colonials fall to 4-8 on the year and 0-1 in A-10.

Sophomore outside hitter Janine Brown posted her second straight double-double and fifth of the season with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs to lead the visiting.

GW junior Juliene McLaughlin also recorded 10 kills and 13 digs while Jessica Vesey added 12 digs.

The Musketeers' Kate Duchek and Jill Quayle led all players with 12 kills each. Quayle hit .526 (12-2-19) with six block assists.

XU jumped out to an 18-10 lead before GW mounted an 11-5 run to pull back within 29-28. A kill by XU's Danielle Skrajewski ended the game and gave Xavier the narrow victory. The Musketeers led throughout game two and pushed the lead to 28-19 before another Colonials run put GW back in the game. Another kill by Skrajewski would end the late 6-1 run and give the game to Xavier. The final game of the match found the two teams battling back and forth early but a key 8-1 run by the Musketeers was capped with a kill by setter Jenn Welsh and put XU up for good at 17-9.

GW (4-8, 0-1 A-10) will try to even it's A-10 record when it faces Dayton Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. match in Ohio.
