PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The George Washington volleyball team had little trouble in winning its fourth straight match, a 3-0 sweep of La Salle Saturday in Philadelphia. It marked the A-10 opener for both teams. The Colonials dispatched the Explorers by the scores, 25-18, 25-12, 25-21, in just over an hour at LU's Tom Gola Arena.

GW's Katie Butz led the offense with 12 points on 11 kills in 18 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Abby Syverson and Lauren Whyte added 8.5 points each with seven kills. Leah Hill contributed a team-high 16 digs while A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, Candace Silva-Martin added 13 digs. Katie Zulandt hit an errorless .571 with four kills in seven attempts.

GW took control early in the first set and raced out to a 12-5 lead while taking advantage of several Explorer hitting errors. La Salle never got closer than six points down as GW cruised to the 25-18 victory on a kill by Whyte. The second set was more lopsided with GW taking a 14-4 lead and was never threatened en route to the 25-12 blowout.

The third set was the most competitive with three lead changes and five ties, the last coming at 5-5 before a 10-4 run by the Colonials gave GW plenty of breathing room. The Explorers, however, rallied to within three at match point after a GW attack error. Leading 24-21, Whyte took a set from Alyssa Valentine and crushed the match-winner, 25-21.

As a team, the Colonials' offense was spectacularly efficient hitting a season-high .384 on 46 kills in 99 swings while committing just eight errors. GW's best hitting match prior to Friday came in the season-opener when the Colonials combined to hit .267 in a 3-2 victory over Georgetown. La Salle was held to just .146 (30-15-103).

La Salle (3-16, 0-1 A-10) was led by Rachel Stemper and Lauren Noga, each with six points on five kills and a block solo. Breanna Mazalewski added a team-high 16 digs for the Explorers.

GW (9-4, 1-0 A-10) will spend the night in Philadelphia and face Temple Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. match at McGonigle Hall.
