Volleyball Edges Charlotte, 3-2, in A-10 Thriller

WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team overcame a slow start to defeat visiting Charlotte, 3-2, Saturday night in the A-10 opener for both teams. The Colonials won by the scores, 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 15-6 in a back-and-forth battle at Charles E. Smith Center.
The Colonials combined to hit .291 for the match compared to Charlotte's .219. Both teams recorded 53 kills. GW sophomore Lauren Whyte led all players with 17 kills while hitting .375. She added a pair of key solo blocks during the decisive fifth set. Teammate Katie Zulandt hit .421 on 11 kills with four service aces. Candace Silva -Martin recorded a match-high 15 digs.
The teams kept it close in the first set before Charlotte pulled away from a 15-15 tie with a 6-1 spurt for a 21-16 advantage and rolled to the 25-20 win.
Set two featured three lead changes and four ties, the last coming at 5-5 before the Colonials asserted control and built a 21-15 lead after a 49er service error. Charlotte closed to 24-20 before an attack error gave the set to GW, 25-20. The third set was tied a 17-17 before a kill by Kathleen Hicks and four consecutive service aces by Charlotte's Kalan Thompson staked the 49ers to a 22-17 lead. Charlotte won the set, 25-19 on a kill by Kara Raker. The momentum shifted dramatically in the fourth set as the Colonials combined to hit .542 on 13 kills in 24 attempts with no errors en route to the 25-15 triumph.
The Colonials never trailed in the final set after opening the frame with a 4-0 lead on kills from Whyte, MacKenzie Knox and Hillary DeCarl. After a pair of GW attack errors brought Charlotte to within three at 6-3, the Colonials went on a 6-0 run to put the set out of reach at 12-3. A 49er attack error ended the set, 15-6, in favor of GW.
Charlotte (9-7, 0-1 A-10) was led by Hicks' 12 kills, two aces and a pair of block assists for 15 points. Leah Leventhal and Bianca Rouse accounted for 12.5 points each, Leventhal on 11 kills and Rouse with 10. Abbie Rees led the 49ers with 11 digs.
GW (11-6, 1-0 A-10) next plays Tuesday night when it hosts VCU in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
