Volleyball Wins A-10 Opener at Duquesne, 3-1

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The GW Volleyball team snapped a three-match slide by defeating Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams Friday night in Pittsburgh. GW dispatched the Dukes by the scores, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-8 in a one-hour, 55-minute contest at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
After falling behind 17-10 to open the first set, the Colonials rallied to tie the set at 20-20 on a Duquesne attack error. With the set tied again at 21-21, the Colonials began to pull away on a pair of Liz Moult kills and won the set on another Dukes attack error, 25-22.
Set two was highly competitive and knotted at 20-20 before the Dukes surged ahead for good on a pair of GW attack errors, a service ace by Tricia Mullen and a kill from Jessica Artman to edge the Colonials, 25-23. Set three came down to the wire when, leading 24-23, GW took advantage of an attack error by DU's Brittany Poling to win the set.
Set four was all GW as the Colonials raced out to a 6-0 lead and were never threatened as they breezed to the 25-8 rout.
GW's Katie Butz paced the Colonials' attack with 15.5 points on a match-high 14 kills while hitting .342 with three blocks. Senior Liz Moult added 12 kills for 12 points and Leah Hill hit an errorless .471 with eight kills in 17 attempts. Hill led all players with 19 digs and Maggie Wright recorded 18 digs. Alyssa Valentine assisted on 46 of GW's 56 kills on the evening.
Duquesne (10-5, 0-1 A-10) was led by Amanda Humphrey's 14 points on 12 kills and three blocks while Artman scored 11.5 points on 10 kills and three blocks.
The victory gave GW a 29-7 lead in the all-time series with Duquesne including a 4-1 advantage in A-10 openers between the teams.
