Volleyball Dispatches Duquesne 3-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW Volleyball team defeated visiting Duquesne, 30-22, 30-20, 30-25, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams Saturday night at Smith Center. GW seniors Sarah Hokom (12 kills) and Ruth Lazzari (14 kills) each posted a double-double with 19 digs apiece as the Colonials improved to 12-2, 1-0 in the Atlantic 10.
GW freshman Juliene McLaughlin came off the bench to hit .333 with 12 kills in 24 attacks in the in the one-hour, 34-minute match. Junior Katie Downey also .333 with seven kills and one error in 18 swings. It was GW's 25th victory in 29 meetings with Duquesne.
Duquesne (5-7, 0-1 A-10) was led by Diana Wuebker with 12 kills while teammate Stephanie Hopkins added 19 digs. Sarah Morrow hit .304 (8-1-23) with 13 digs and a pair of block solos.
The Colonials combined to hit .269 (53-14-145) as a team compared to .184 (41-15-141) for Duquesne. The Colonials also scored seven points on service aces compared to just one ace for the Dukes. GW also gave away nine points on service errors, one fewer than Duquense which had 10 service miscues.
GW (12-2, 1-0 A-10) hosts Fordham next Friday Oct. 3 followed by a match with Rhode Island Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. at Smith Center.
