ST. LOUIS, MO -- The GW Volleyball team concluded it's long two-match road trip with a 3-0 loss to Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at SLU's Chaifetz Pavilion, site of the 2008 A-10 Volleyball Championship.
The Colonials, who flew directly to St. Louis from Pittsburgh where they defeated Duquesne Friday night, were brought down by their own errors as much as by the play of the Billikens. GW gave away 26 points on self-imposed miscues including 22 attack errors and three service errors with no service aces. GW combined to hit just .069 (29-22-101) compared to .302 (44-12-106) for the Billikens. SLU's blocking also played a major role in the defeat as they combined for 14 total blocks, including seven assisted blocks by Sammi McCloud, while GW teamed up to block four SLU attacks.
The first set was the most competitive of the match as both teams battled to a 16-16 tie before a kill by SLU's Sally Warning ignited a 6-2 run that gave the Billikens a 22-18 lead and they held on for the 25-22 victory.
The second set was all Saint Louis as they took control early for a 10-4 lead that soon ballooned to 23-12 on a combination of SLU kills and GW errors en route to the 25-13 triumph. The third set was close up until the teams were tied at 11-11. SLU then scored 12 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 23-14 lead and breezed to the 25-17 win.
GW's Leah Hill paced the Colonials' attack with nine points on a team-high nine kills with nine digs but hit just .115. Senior Liz Moult added six kills but also committed six errors to go with a pair of block assists. Senior libero Maggie Wright again led the Colonials with 10 digs while Alyssa Valentine recorded 16 assists.
Saint Louis (10-4, 2-0 A-10) was led by Warning's 17.5 points on 14 kills and six blocks while Bridget Fonke scored 14 points on 13 kills and two blocks. SLU setter Whitney Roth assisted on 37 of the Billikens' 44 kills.
