Hokom Pounds 19 Kills in Victory

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington volleyball team won its third straight match Friday night with a three-game sweep of Fordham. The Colonials defeated the visiting Rams, 30-22, 30-23, 30-16, at Smith Center. GW senior Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) led all players with 19 kills and had 10 digs while hitting .350.
GW freshman Juliene McLaughlin (Lindsay, Ontario/Lindsay Collegiate) contributed 12 kills and 14 digs in the hit .293 with 17 kills and 13 digs in the one-hour, 25-minute match. GW senior Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) also had 14 digs to go with eight kills.
The victory was GW's 10th straight over Fordham as GW holds a commanding 16-1 advantage in the all-time series.
Fordham (7-10, 0-2 A-10) was led by Jamee Stimson's 12 kills while teammate Mele Misi led all players with 17 digs.
As a team, GW hit .277 (54-18-130) compared to Fordham's .125 (35-19-128). The Colonials sprinted out to a 12-4 lead in game one before the Rams cut the deficit to four (14-10). A pair of Hokom kills extended the Colonials' lead to 19-11 and GW coasted the rest of the way.
Game two was played much closer with GW clinging to a 12-11 lead before pulling away for the 30-23 victory. The third game was never in doubt as GW built a 12-4 lead and breezed to the 30-16 rout.
GW (13-2, 2-0 A-10) hosts Rhode Island Saturday in a 7 p.m. match at Smith Center.
