GW Volleyball Swept by VCU in A-10 Opener

RICHMOND, Va. - The George Washington volleyball team opened its Atlantic 10 schedule on Friday night but fell to VCU, 3-0, at Siegel Center. Set scores were 25-27, 21-25, 20-25.

Junior Kelsey Newman led GW (5-10, 0-1 A-10) with nine kills along with six digs and two service aces. Freshman Chidima Osuchukwu posted six kills and three block assists.

The first set was GW's best of the night as the Colonials hit .261 (12k-6e-23a) and held a late 21-18 lead. VCU (14-4, 4-0 A-10) responded by swinging .406 (16k-3e-32a) and closed on a 9-4 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

GW opened the second set on a 7-3 run but relinquished the lead as the Rams battled back to tie the score at 10-10. The Colonials regained the lead at 11-10 but VCU applied the pressure with a 15-10 run to go up 2-0.

The Colonials held the Rams to a negative attack percentage in the third set but VCU was still able to close the match with a 25-20 victory.

GW travels to Rhode Island for a Sunday afternoon meeting at 1:00 p.m. at Keaney Gymnasium
