Volleyball Upended By Duquesne, 3-1
Vernand, Lazzari Each Post Double-Doubles in Loss

PITTSBURGH, PA - The GW volleyball team won the first game before dropping three straight to Duquesne Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh. The Colonials fell, 30-28, 25-30, 19-30, 27-30 to the Dukes in a two-hour, five-minute A-10 battle. It marked the first conference victory of the season for Duquesne and dropped GW's conference record to 2-3.
Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach,CA/Huntington Beach) had one of her best matches of the season posting a match-high 15 kills with 13 digs and six blocks while hitting .279. Junior Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) added 14 kills and a match-high 24 digs to lead the Colonials.
The Dukes (11-8, 1-3 A-10) were led by Sarah Morrow and Stephanie Hopkins who tallied 13 kills each.
Neither team was particularly efficient on offense. GW managed to hit just .074 (58-42-217) as a team while Duquesne hit .141 (59-32-192). The Colonials gave away nine points on service errors and went an entire match without a service ace for the first time this season.
The loss was just GW's fifth in 29 meetings with Duquesne. GW will host the Dukes on Nov. 2 in Washington.
GW (11-9, 2-3 A-10) next plays Rhode Island on Saturday, Oct. 19 on the road and at Fordham on Oct. 20 in New York.
