Volleyball Woes Continue Against Georgetown

Oct. 20, 2001

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 20) - The Colonials volleyball team committed 28 attack errors while hitting just .085 in a three-game loss at Georgetown Saturday night at McDonough Gym. The Hoyas combined to hit .333 with 49 kills and just 12 errors in 111 attacks to defeat GW, 30-20, 30-23, 31-29, in a one-hour, 25-minute match. It marked the seventh straight loss for the Colonials-their longest drought since a seven-match skid early in the 1996 season.

The Colonials held brief leads in all three games but were unable to finish off the Hoyas.

Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) paced the Colonials' attack with a team-high eight kills, including a dig that bounced off her shoulder and fell across the net untouched.

Freshman OH Katie Downey (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) had the best offensive match of her young career hitting an errorless .500 with six kills in 12 swings. Aside from Downey and Hokom, freshman Britta Stroman (Richfield, MN/Edina) was the only other Colonial with a positive hitting percentage. The two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week had six kills in 16 attempts with just two errors for a .250 percentage.

Georgetown (12-6) was led by Yulia Vtyurina's 15 kills while Lauren Warner added 14 kills with a match-high 10 digs. Vtyurina is the younger sister of former GW All-America Svetlana Vtyurina ('96).

GW (4-13, 3-5 A-10) will try to right themselves against Fordham on Sunday, Oct. 28 when the Rams visit Smith Center for a 2:00 p.m. match. The Colonials defeated Fordham, 3-1, on Sept. 28 in the Bronx.
