BRONX, NY - The GW volleyball team's never-say-die perseverance led to its second consecutive five-game A-10 road victory by defeating Fordham, 30-24, 28-30, 24-30, 33-31, 15-12 Sunday in the Bronx. The victory comes on the heels of a five-game victory over Rhode Island Saturday.
The Colonials got a pair of remarkable 20-20 efforts from juniors Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) and Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) as each had 20 kills and 21 digs. Lazzarri hit .280 (20-6-50) while Hokom hit .190 (20-9-58) with four blocks in the two-hour, 17-minute battle.
More good news for the Colonials came in the form of sophomore Britta Stroman (Richfield, MN/Edina) who has made it all the way back from off-season shoulder surgery with a 13-kill, .414 hitting percentage effort Sunday. The victory improved GW's conference record to 4-3.
Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach,CA/Huntington Beach) posted her second straight strong outing by hitting .279 with 17 kills in 43 swings with just five errors. Colonials' setter Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA/St. Mary's) assisted on 61 of GW's 74 kills and added 17 digs.
As a team, GW hit .212 (79-32-222) compared to Fordham's .191 (69-28-215). The Rams scored 14 points off of service aces and out-blocked the Colonials, 10-6.
The Rams (7-15, 1-6 A-10) were led by Mele Mist's 18 kills and match-high 22 digs. GW will host the Rams in a rematch on Nov. 15 in Washington.
GW (13-9, 4-3 A-10) returns to Washington for a pair of key A-10 clashes next weekend beginning with Dayton on Friday, Oct. 25 followed by Xavier on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Smith Center. GW split with the Ohio teams in September dropping a close five-game match at Xavier while winning an equally close five-gamer at Dayton.
