CINCINNATI, OH -- The GW Volleyball team entered Saturday night's match at Xavier tied with the Musketeers for second place in the A-10 standings with 6-2 league records but Xavier took sole possession with a dominant 3-0 victory Saturday night at the Cintas Center. The Musketeers prevailed by the scores 27-25, 25-16, 25-12. With the loss, GW plummets to fifth place in the Atlantic 10 standings behind Xavier, Saint Louis, Duquesne and No. 18 Dayton. The setback concluded a 0-2 road trip to Ohio as the Colonials suffered back-to-back sweeps for the first time all season.

The first set was the most competitive of the evening with one lead change and four ties, the last coming at 25-25 before consecutive kills by Kathryn Traut ended the set. GW scored the first two points of the second set before Xavier rallied and breezed to the 25-16 win. The third set was all Xavier after just one tie at 1-1, the Musketeers took the lead on a kill from Traut and never trailed en route to the 25-12 triumph.

Xavier had a team attack percentage of .299 (49k-14e-117att) while GW combined to hit just .107 (32-19-121) for the match.

Junior Alex Coward and sophomore Lauren Whyte led the Colonials with nine kills each. Coward hit .300 and added a pair of block assists for 10 points. Senior Katie Zulandt hit a team-high .357 on six kills in 14 swings with just one attack error. She also assisted on three blocks for atotal of 7.5 points. Senior Leah Hill, playing strictly in a defensive role, led the Colonials with 12 digs. Setter Katie Crosby assisted on 27 of GW's 32 kills and added seven digs and an ace.

Xavier (14-7, 7-2) was led by Chelsea Campbell's 12 kills, 14 digs and six block assists. Traut and Sarah Brown added 11 kills each and Brown served four aces for 15.5 points. Campbell and Stephanie Vorherr each recorded a team-high 14 digs.

 

 

GW (17-9, 6-3 A-10) next plays at Charlotte (12-12, 3-6 A-10) this Friday, Oct. 29, in a 7 p.m. match. The Colonials defeated the 49ers, 3-2, on Sept. 25 at Smith Center. Xavier comes to Smith Center for the regular-season finale and `Senior Day' on Nov. 14.
