Colonials Shock Colonials, 3-0

Oct. 24, 2003

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA - The Colonials won a volleyball match Friday, only it was the wrong Colonials. The Robert Morris College Colonials defeated the GW Colonials, 30-11, 30-21, 30-17, in a nonconference match at RMC's John Jay Gym. GW played without the services of injured senior setter Lauren Dunning for the second straight match.

Robert Morris (16-10) blasted GW in game one hitting .333 with 16 kills and just two errors while coach Jojit Coronel's squad committed more errors (nine) than kills (six) resulting in a -.064 hitting percentage.

GW's hitting errors, combined with RMC's blocking, were too much for the Colonials to overcome. As a team, RMC hit .289 (43-10-114) compared to -.060 (27-35-134) for GW. Robert Morris also out-blocked GW, 12-5 during the one-hour, 45-minute match.

GW senior Ruth Lazzari was the only GW player to record more kills than errors with seven kills in 22 attempts with just two miscues for a .227 percentage. She also added a match-high 17 digs and a block solo.

Senior co-captain Sarah Hokom posted one of the few negative hitting perfomances of her career with eight kills and 10 errors in 37 swings.

Freshman setter Kaimana Lee, subbing for the injured Dunning, recorded 24 assists on GW's 27 kills and added a block solo and six digs.

In the only other meeting between the teams, GW breezed to a 3-0 rout in the third match of the 2000 season, Coronel's first as GW head coach.

GW (17-5, 5-2 A-10) remains in Pittsburgh to play Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 match Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
