GW Breaks School Record with Nine Block Solos in Key A-10 Victory
Oct. 26, 2002
WASHINGTON, DC - The GW Volleyball team salvaged a split of the season series with Xavier by sweeping the visiting Musketeers, 30-28, 30-25, 30-28, in a key Atlantic 10 Conference match at Smith Center Saturday night. GW junior Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) again paced the Colonials by hitting .316 with 13 kills, one error in 38 swings and added 16 digs.
Sophomore setter Kristin Kiefer (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara) had a career-high 41 assists in relief of starter Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA/Stockton). Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) put in a solid effort with 12 kills and 13 digs while hitting .222. GW junior Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) added 11 kills and a match-high 19 digs in the one-hour, 34-minute match.
Xavier's Meggie Hoffman led the Musketeers with 16 kills and Molly Martin added 19 digs.
Neither team was particularly efficient on offense as Xavier (14-10, 5-4 A-10) hit just .115 (45-27-156) as a team compared to .199 (49-18-156) for GW. The Colonials broke a three-year-old school record for most block solos in a three-game match with nine, four by Hokom.
GW (14-10, 5-4 A-10) hosts Duquesne Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Smith Center.
