Volleyball Blocked by Temple, 3-0

Oct. 27, 2007

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The GW volleyball team fell to Temple, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at TU's McGonigle Hall. The Owls won the match by the scores 30-15, 30-28, 30-21 in a two-hour contest. The loss gave Temple a split of the regular-season series after GW defeated Temple, 3-2, back on Sept. 28 in Washington.

Temple hit with deadly accuracy throughout and recorded a total of 54 kills in 127 swings with just seven errors for a .370 team hitting percentage. The Owls did not commit any attack errors during game one hitting .581 on 18 kills in 31 attempts. The .370 team attack percentage was, by far, the highest against GW this season. The Colonials combined to hit .146 on 41 kills in 123 attempts but committed 23 errors. GW also failed to serve an ace for the first time all season.

Temple's dominance was not restricted just to its offense, however, as the Owls put up 11 total blocks compared to one block solo, by Janine Brown, for GW. Brown again paced the Colonials' attack with 13 points on a team-high 12 kills and added 14 digs for her 21st double-double in 24 matches this season. Liz Moult added 11 points on 11 kills and freshman Chelsea Cramer registered 15 digs.

Game one was controlled by the Owls who took an 18-11 lead and proceeded to score 12 of the final 15 points for the easy 30-15 victory.

GW took control early in game two and led 17-16 before the Owls took the lead on a pair of GW attack errors. Brown smashed a kill to get the Colonials to within 29-27 and a Temple error closed to the gap to one at 29-28 forcing Temple to call a timeout. TU's Yue Liu then took a set from Jackie Morrison and put the game away with a kill.

GW again came out strong in game three and built a 7-2 lead before Temple rallied. The Owls overtook the Colonials on a service ace by Patricia Vernon to give TU the 12-11 lead it never relinquished.

Temple (12-16, 7-4 A-10) was led by Yun Yi Zhang's 23 points on 21 kills (3 errors), 12 digs and four block assists while hitting .514. Liu added 12 points on 11 kills and hit .357.

GW (12-14, 4-6 A-10) next plays at Charlotte on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. Charlotte will host the A-10 Volleyball Championship, Nov. 16-18, at Halton Arena.
