Oct. 28, 2011
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The George Washington volleyball team opened its Ohio road trip with a 3-0 loss to Xavier Friday night at Cintas Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-14, 25-12. The Colonials will conclude the trip with a match against Dayton Saturday night.
GW (17-7, 6-4 A-10) had trouble establishing an attack as they hit just .044 (23k-19e-90a) for the match compared to Xavier's (15-9, 7-3 A-10) .395 attack percentage.
The two teams entered Friday's contest tied for third place in the Atlantic 10 with identical 6-3 records. The Colonials defeated Xavier 3-2 back on Oct. 9.
The opening frame was the closest set of the match as the two teams battled through nine ties and three lead changes before Xavier prevailed 25-17. The Colonials opened the match on a 4-1 run but squandered the lead as Xavier roared back to knot the set at 5-5. The teams then exchanged points until a tie at 12-12. From there the Musketeers closed the set on a 13-5 run to take a 1-0 lead.
Xavier hit above .400 in both the second and third sets en route to 25-14 and 25-17 victories, respectively, to clinch the match. The Musketeers used a strong defensive front, totaling 10.5 team blocks, to maintain the lead throughout the evening.
Junior Lauren Whyte led the Colonials with nine kills in addition to six digs. Freshman Christy Harper hit .129 and added nine kills while sophomores Rachael Goss and Taylor Knox each added three kills each. Junior Katie Crosby narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 20 assists and eight digs.
The Colonials will visit Dayton Friday night at 7 p.m. The Flyers swept GW 3-0 on October 7.
