Box Score

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The George Washington volleyball team had four players register double-figure kills in sweeping Charlotte, 3-0, Thursday night at Charlotte's Halton Arena. GW won by the scores 30-27, 30-25, 30-26 in one hour, 30 minutes.

The triumph snapped a three-match skid that began Oct. 23 with a 3-2 loss to Charlotte at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. It also marked GW's first volleyball victory over the 49ers, one of the two new members of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

GW sophomore Janine Brown (Jacksonville, FL) led alll players with 19 kills and 14 digs. She was one of four Colonials with double-figure kills. Juliene McLaughlin (Lindsay, ONT), had 13 kills followed by North Carolina native Kelly Kabbes (Cary, NC) with 12 kills and Shannon Parks (Marietta, GA) with 11 kills. Kabbes hit a robust .550 committing just one error in 20 swings and assisted on four blocks. GW setter Kaimana Lee (Wailuku, HI) assisted on 53 of GW's 64 kills.

Both teams hit for a high percentage in the match, with GW posting a .351 (64-18-131) compared to .313 (50-14-115) for Charlotte.

Charlotte (16-14, 7-5 A-10) was led by sophomore Alma Arroyo with 14 kills on .367 hitting, and 14 digs. UNCC senior Abbey Szlanfucht had 13 kills and 11 digs, while Jessica Oldenburg added 10 kills.

Game one was tied at 22 before GW edged ahead with a pair of points and outscored the Niners 6-5 down the stretch to take a 30-27 win. The Colonials were hitting on all cylinders in the first game posting a .429 team attack percentage.

In game two, a 7-0 run by the Colonials overcame a 20-23 deficit by reeling off four straight kills, a service ace, and two more kills to take control.

After the 10-minute intermission, the teams battled to a 21-21 tie in the game three before back-to-back points on a kill and a service ace gave GW the lead. The Colonials pounded six kills down the stretch--including the final two by Kabbes--to end the match.

GW (11-15, 4-8 A-10) returns to Washington for a Sunday matinee against Fordham beginning at noon.
