WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW Volleyball team swept Charlotte, 3-0, Sunday afternoon on 'Senior Day' at GW's Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials won by the scores, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19, on `Senior Day.' It marked the final home appearances for GW seniors Madelyn Bagby, Katie Butz and Abby Syverson who were honored in a pre-match ceremony. The triumph earned a season split with the 49ers this season. GW fell to Charlotte, 3-1, at UNCC's Halton Arena on Oct. 17.

Neither team was particularly efficient as GW combined to hit .164 (47 kills - 25 errors - 134 attempts) for the match while the 49ers hit just .101 (25-13-119). The victory was GW's 12th win in its last 16 outings and 12th three-set sweep of an opponent this season.

In her final home match, Butz smashed a team-high 13 kills in 39 attempts for a .256 percentage with three block assists for 14.5 points. GW freshman Lauren Whyte added 11.5 points on 10 kills and 16 digs for her second straight double-double and sixth of the season. Candace Silva-Martin added a match-high 20 digs. Setter Alyssa Valeentine assisted on 35 of GWs's 47 kills (74 percent) and added 11 digs.

Charlotte (15-14, 6-7 A-10) was led by Kara Raker's 8.5 points with an errorless .375 hitting percentage on six kills in 16 swings. Kaitlin Knight led th 49ers with 17 digs. Setter Sheri Davis assisted on 22 of Charlotte's 25 kills in the match.

The first set was tight through seven lead changes and 13 ties, the last coming at 23-23 on a service ace from the 49ers' Kathleen Hicks. Charlotte then committed back-to-back attack errors to give the set to GW, 25-23. Set two was nearly as competitive with four lead changes and eight ties. After a kill from Jennifer Webb knotted the score at 15-15, GW got a kill from Syverson to spark a 4-1 run and give the Colonials the lead they never relinquished. Butz smashed a kill to end the set, 25-20 in favor of the Colonials.

 

 

The third set was all GW after pulling away from a 2-2 tie to outscore the 49ers, 15-7, and take a commanding 17-9 lead. GW coasted to the 25-19 victory ending the set on a kill by Leah Hill.

GW (21-9, 8-5 A-10) next travels to Ohio for a two-match road swing to Xavier Friday in a 1 p.m. match followed by a match at Dayton on Saturday at 7 p.m. Dayton is the host site for the six-team A-10 Volleyball Championship, Nov. 20-22.
