Volleyball Falls at Dayton, 3-1

DAYTON, OH (Nov. 9) - The Colonials volleyball team committed 36 attack errors while hitting just .101 in a four-game loss at Dayton Friday night in Ohio. The Flyers combined to hit .299 with 62 kills and 21 errors in 137 attacks to defeat GW, 30-13, 26-30, 30-20, 30-24, in a one-hour, 45-minute match.
Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) had a double-double and led GW with team-highs in both kills (15) and digs (12).
Sophomore OH Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) also doubled for the Cololnials with 13 kills and 10 digs.
In game one, the Flyers raced out to a 12-3 early lead after a kill by senior Xinxin Zhang (Beijing, China). Junior Susan Westbrock later nailed a slide from the outside and led the Flyers to a 30-13 victory.
GW bounced back in game two with a 9-7 lead after a kill by Hokom. The match was tight with seven lead changes, however the Flyers committed a series of errors and the Colonials captured the win at 30-26.
The Flyers returned in game three with the dominant blocking of sophomore Erin Treadway and senior Katie Ferriell who contributed four block assists to stake the Flyers to a 12-8 lead. UD sophomore Shannon Gardner had a solo block in the middle lifting the Flyers to 21-12 advantage. Gardner later sealed the 30-20 win with a powerful kill from the middle.
In game four, Ferriell nailed an ace serve tying the game at 6-6. Ferriell continued to take over the net with a kill making it 16-12 Flyers. After back-to-back blocks by Treadway and Ferriell, the Flyers led 25-18 and Gardner once again slammed home the winning kill for a 30-24 Flyer win.
Dayton (21-4, 14-1 A-10) was led by Katie Ferriell's 16 kills and eight blocks while hitting .467.
The Flyers were dominant atthe net with 14 total blocks to just two for GW. Dayton also served strongly with 13 aces compared to six for the Colonials. Dayton clinched the A-10 regular-season championship and No. 1 seed in the A-10 Tournament with the victory.
GW (6-16, 5-9 A-10) continue their road trip to Cincinnati to face Xavier Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Colonials lost to Xavier, 3-0, in their previous meeting Oct. 12 at Smith Center.
