WASHINGTON, DC - GW inched closer to a berth in the A-10 Tournament for the second straight year by defeating visiting La Salle, 30-14, 30-20, 30-25, Friday night at Smith Center. Senior Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA) pounded a match-high 15 kills in 31 swings to hit .419 for GW in a one-hour, 24-minute match..
Sophomore Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA) posted an errorless hitting night with seven kills in 14 attempts and hit .500 with a pair of block solos and blcok assists
Senior Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) added 10 kills and matched her career high with four service aces. Senior setter Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA) and sophomore libero Jessica Vesey (Poway, CA) contributed 11 digs each.
La Salle's Robyn Wright led the Explorers with eight kills and teammate Caitlin DeJong added a match-high 15 digs.
The Colonials outplayed the Explorers on both sides of the net accumulating 50 kills to 28 for La Salle and digging 59 attacks compared to 48 digs for the visitors. GW also totaled eight blocks to four for La Salle.
GW was threatened only in the third game after La Salle took a 19-14 lead on a kill by Lauren Woods. GW battled back to tie the game at 21-21 and took the lead on a kill by senior Laura Harrison (West Hills, CA). From there, the Colonials outscored La Salle 8-3 for the final margin.
GW (21-8, 8-5) hosts Temple in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at Smith Center. The match will be preceded by a Senior Day ceremony honoring GW's four seniors: Dunning, Harrison, Hokom and Lazzari. A victory over Temple guarantees GW a berth in the four-team A-10 Tournament Nov. 21-22.
