GW Volleyball Announces 28-Match Schedule for 2013 Season
Colonials to Host Atlantic 10 Championship for First Time Since 1991
June 25, 2013
WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team will host 11 regular-season matches and the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship on the newly-designed floor at the Charles E. Smith Center as part of its 28-match schedule, third-year head coach Amanda Ault has announced.
The Colonials will participate in a quartet of early-season tournaments and play four matches against three teams that qualified for the 2012 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. GW's schedule also boasts eight matches against teams that finished with an RPI ranking in the Top 100 in 2012.
GW opens the season at home for the GW Invitational at the Charles E. Smith Center, August 30-31. The Colonials open the tournament against local-rival Maryland in a featured Welcome Week match before a doubleheader against UMBC and Ole Miss on Saturday for You Can Play Day.
The following weekend, Sept. 6-7, the team heads south to Orlando, Fla., for the UCF Classic against the host Knights, Stephen F. Austin, and Elon.
After a non-conference match at District rival Georgetown on September 11, the Colonials continue their preseason tournament schedule at the Carolina Classic, Sept 13-14, against 2012 NCAA Championship participant North Carolina, Albany and James Madison.
GW concludes its preseason tournament schedule at the NIU Invitational in DeKalb, Ill., September 20-21. During the event the Colonials will face Northern Illinois, NCAA Tournament participant IPFW and Western Illinois.
The Colonials return to the Smith Center for a final non-conference match against Towson in the Aloha Alumni Match on September 29.
GW opens Atlantic 10 Conference play with a road trip to VCU (Oct. 4) and Rhode Island (Oct. 6) before returning home to host La Salle on October 11 for the annual Dig Pink match. That same weekend, VCU makes a return trip to Smith Center for the Greek & Neon Match on October 12.
After a visit to La Salle on October 18, the Colonials will face conference newcomer George Mason on October 20 for Rivalry Night. GW holds a 31-8 all-time series advantage over George Mason but this match marks the first as conference opponents.
Following road visits to Duquesne (Oct. 25) and George Mason (Oct. 27), GW opens a four-match home stretch with matches against defending Atlantic 10 Champions Dayton (Nov. 1, 90s Night), Duquesne (Nov. 2, Buff Out), Fordham (Nov. 8, Movember Night) and Rhode Island (Nov. 10, Senior Day).
The Colonials wrap the regular season with a road trip to the Midwest to visit Saint Louis (Nov. 15) and Dayton (Nov. 17).
The Atlantic 10 Championship returns to the Charles E. Smith Center for the third time overall and the first time since 1991 on November 22-24. The Colonials boast an all-time record of 2-2 in A-10 Championship matches played at the Smith Center.
