NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Seeking its first Atlantic 10 Championship since 2000, the George Washington volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the 12-team Atlantic 10 in a preseason poll conducted by the league's head coaches.
The Colonials garnered 104 total points to earn its highest preseason poll pick since the 2010 season.
Dayton was the unanimous pick to defend its Atlantic 10 Championship after their third straight title and fourth in the past five years. Xavier was picked to finish second by garnering 129 points and 10 of the possible 12 second-place votes while Saint Louis, which has won two A-10 titles since 2006, was voted third. The Colonials sit fourth followed by Duquesne, the host of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship.
Conference newcomers VCU and Butler sit sixth and seventh, respectively. The poll is rounded out by Rhode Island, Charlotte, Fordham, Temple and La Salle.
Leading the Colonials in 2012 are senior co-captains Lauren Whyte and Candace Silva-Martin. Whyte was an A-10 All-Conference First Team selection last season while Silva-Martin moved into sole possession of first place on the career digs list. They are joined by eight additional letterwinners and four newcomers.
The 2012 season gets underway next Friday when the Colonials travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to visit Purdue University for the Mortar Board Premier. GW will open the 2012 campaign against Pittsburgh on Aug. 24 before facing Northern Iowa and the host Boilermakers on Aug. 25. You can read more about the Colonials 2012 schedule here.
