Volleyball Opens Home Schedule with GW Invitational This Weekend

LEADING OFF: The George Washington volleyball team will open the home portion of its schedule with three matches across two days at this weekend's GW Invitational at the Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials will face Indiana on Friday night at 7 p.m. before a Saturday doubleheader against LIU Brooklyn (12 p.m.) and Hofstra (7 p.m.).

WINE DOWN FRIDAY: The Colonials will host a wine tasting and open bar inside the Colonials Club of the Smith Center prior to Friday's match. The cost is $10 and includes an open bar with a selection of wines for fans of age. Coupled with the price of a single-match ticket, the total cost is $16.

LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials opened the 2017 season by going 1-2 at last weekend's UT Invitational in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Buff and Blue erased a 2-0 deficit in the first match of the weekend to storm back and knock off Wofford, 3-2.

FIRE POWER: GW had plenty of offensive options in the opening weekend with a trio of players recording 27 kills or more across the three matches.

Sophomore Skylar Iott led the way with 31 kills, including a match-high 15 winners in the win over Wofford.

Sophomore Jordan Young finished with 28 kills, highlighted by 11 against Wofford. Junior Kelsey Clark wrapped the weekend with 27 kills, with her best match coming against Western Michigan (13 kills).

NEW FACES: All four of GW's newcomers saw action last weekend with two players making a significant impact.

Freshman Sydney Welch was named to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 64 digs, including a match-high 32 against Wofford. She totaled 64 digs in the three matches for an average of 5.33 per set.

Freshman Callie Fauntleroy had an efficient weekend of attack, swinging .321 across the three matches with 14 kills. Her collegiate debut was nearly perfect as she put down eight errorless kills against Wofford on Friday. She also led the Colonials with nine total blocks in the opening weekend.

Graduate student Stacey Benton and freshman Marianna Warren also played in each match. Benton played in all 12 sets and enters this weekend tied for the team lead with a trio of service aces. She also totaled 18 digs (1.50/set) and eight assists. Warren played in five sets over the weekend and totaled six kills, four assists, five digs and two blocks.

GW INVITE: The Colonials hold an all-time record of 81-33 (.710) in GW Invitational contests.

THE FIELD: GW fell to Indiana during the 2011 season in the only meeting between the two programs and is 5-5 across ten all-time matches with Hofstra. GW is winless in three previous meetings against LIU Brooklyn.
