PHILADELPHIA, PA -- GW freshman Alyssa Valentine (Tustin, CA) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The Colonials' setter earned the honor after she averaged 9.17 assists per set in GW's three matches last weekend. She shares this week's honor with Duquesne freshman Tricia Mullin.

In the season-opener against American, Valentine assisted on 40 of GW's 50 kills as the Colonials rallied from a 0-2 deficit to win three straight sets and the match. The match was part of the DC Challenge tournament played on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. She recorded her first collegiate double-double with 48 assists and 13 digs in leading GW past George Mason, 3-1, on Saturday. As a result of her efforts, she was named to the DC Challenge All-Tournament Team.

Valentine's stats for the week: three matches, 12 sets, 110 assists, four kills, three attack errors, 14 attempts, .071 hitting percentage, 24 digs, one service ace and six block assists for 8.0 points. All told, she assisted on 82 percent of GW's 134 kills in the three-match tournament.

GW (2-1) next travels to University Park, PA, Friday to face Villanova (2-1) at 4:00 p.m. in the Nittany Lion Invitational before facing top-ranked Penn State (3-0) Saturday at noon.
