Newman Named Co-Player of the Week; Osuchukwu Named Defensive Player of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington volleyball senior Kelsey Newman was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week and sophomore middle blocker Chidima Osuchukwu was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday after the pair led the Colonials to a 3-0 weekend to open the 2014 season.
Newman, who shares the honor with Franki Darnold of Rhode Island, hit .317 with 39 kills, 39 digs and a pair of double-doubles to earn her third career Atlantic 10 weekly award. She followed that match with her second straight one-error performance, totaling nine kills, six digs, two assists and one ace in GW's 3-0 win over Auburn. Newman concluded her weekend by posting her second double-double of the weekend and the 13th of her career with 17 kills and 17 digs in Saturday's win over North Dakota.
