GW Volleyball Pair Nabs A-10 Weekly Awards
Newman Named Co-Player of the Week; Osuchukwu Named Defensive Player of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington volleyball senior Kelsey Newman was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week and sophomore middle blocker Chidima Osuchukwu was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday after the pair led the Colonials to a 3-0 weekend to open the 2014 season.
Newman, who shares the honor with Franki Darnold of Rhode Island, hit .317 with 39 kills, 39 digs and a pair of double-doubles to earn her third career Atlantic 10 weekly award. She was previously named the Player of the Week in November of last season and was honored as Rookie of the Week during her freshman year in 2011.
Newman opened her weekend by posting 13 kills against just one error, along with 16 digs, one assist and one ace in GW's 3-0 sweep of Arkansas State on Friday morning. She followed that match with her second straight one-error performance, totaling nine kills, six digs, two assists and one ace in GW's 3-0 win over Auburn. Newman concluded her weekend by posting her second double-double of the weekend and the 13th of her career with 17 kills and 17 digs in Saturday's win over North Dakota.
Osuchukwu, who was also named GWsports.com's Colonial of the Week on Tuesday, earns her third career A-10 weekly award after being named Rookie of the Week twice during her freshman season.
The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native was named the Most Valuable Player of the GW Invitational after totaling 14.0 total blocks (five solo, nine assists) over three matches in addition to 29 digs. Offensively, she added 36 kills on a .342 attack percentage.
GW will host the Metropolitan University of Puerto Rico in an exhibition match on Wednesday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
