WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team embarks on its first road trip of the 2013 season this weekend when it travels to Orlando, Fla., for the UCF Classic at The Venue beginning Friday afternoon.
The Colonials will face Elon and the host Knights on Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively, before closing the event against Stephen F. Austin at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
GW (1-2) lost to Stephen F. Austin in 1996 in the only meeting between the two teams. This weekend marks the first matches in program history against both Elon and UCF.
The Colonials picked up their first win of 2013 in a 3-0 sweep of UMBC at last weekend's GW Invitational. Junior Kelsey Newman was named to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 36 kills (3.60/set) across three matches and posting two double-doubles.
Six of GW's seven newcomers saw action in the opening weekend of the season. Freshman middle blocker Chidima Osuchukwu hit .375 with 17 kills and 11 blocks over three matches while sophomore transfer setter Jordan Timmer dished out 90 assists (9.0/set).
UCF is off to a 3-1 start after picking up victories over North Florida, Alabama State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at their own UCF Invitational last weekend. Elon went 2-2 with victories over Navy and Campbell at the Navy Invitational, while Stephen F. Austin carries a perfect 4-0 record into the weekend after a sweep at the Southern Mississippi Tournament and a non-conference victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
