PHILADELPHIA, PA -- GW freshman Candace Silva-Martin (Fremont, CA/Harker School) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

The Colonials' libero earned the honors after she amassed 78 digs in helping lead GW to a 2-1 record last week in the Villanova Classic near Philadelphia. She shares this week's Defensive Player honor with Dayton's Lindsay Fletemier.

Silva-Martin has been named to consecutive all-tournament teams in each of the last two weeks following the Diet Coke Classic at the University of Minnesota on Sept. 4-5, and following last weekend's Villanova Classic.

In the Colonials' 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Princeton Friday night at Villanova, Silva-Martin recorded her career-high 34 digs while serving an ace and had an assist. She has totalled double-figure digs in all nine matches of 2009.

She leads the A-10 Conference in digs-per-set average (5.29) despite not having played a match at home. The Colonials have played on the road for the first month of the season while Charles E. Smith Center completes phase II of a major three-phase renovation.

Silva-Martin's stats for the week: three matches, 13 sets, 78 digs (6.0 digs per set), five assists and three service aces for three points.

GW (5-4) next plays in the Towson Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19, at Towson, MD. GW will face Ball State (5-4) Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by matches with Penn and Towson on Saturday.
