NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- George Washington sophomore Lauren Whyte has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It marks her first A-10 weekly honor this season and third overall. She was a two-time Rookie of the Week as a freshman last year.

The Colonials' outside hitter earned the honor after she scored a total of 62.5 points in GW's four matches last week. Whyte's play helped lead GW to a 3-1 record (9-4 sets record) last week in road victories over UMBC Sept. 7 and neutral-site wins over Kent State and Morgan State in the Cleveland State University Invitational Friday and Saturday. Whyte and teammate MacKenzie Knox were named to the All-Tournament Team at the CSU Invitational.

In the Colonials' 3-1 triumph over Morgan State Saturday, Whyte hit .261 with a match-high 18 kills in 46 swings with 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season (15th career).

Whyte has started all 35 sets in GW's 10 matches and leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in kills with 153 and points with 165.5.

Whyte's stats for the week: four matches, 13 sets, 58 kills in 160 attempts with 21 errors for a .231 hitting percentage, 37 digs (2.85 digs per set), four service aces, one assist and one block assist for 62.5 total points.

Whyte and the Colonials (7-3, 0-0 A-10) next host Loyola (5-6) in the home opener Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m. at Charles E. Smith Center, 600 22nd St., NW.
