Volleyball's Valentine Named A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week

Sept. 15, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- GW freshman Alyssa Valentine (Tustin, CA) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The Colonials' setter earned the honor after she averaged 9.17 assists per set in GW's two matches last weekend. She shares this week's honor with Dayton freshman Valerie Akerheim. Valentine also won the award on Sept. 2 following the first week of the season.

She was named the Most Valuable Player of the GW Invitational Saturday after leading the Colonials to a pair of 3-set sweeps over Delaware State on Friday and Rider on Saturday.

Friday against the Hornets, Valentine recorded three kills in four attempts with no errors for a .750 hitting percentage while serving a pair of aces for five points. Against Rider, she hit .500 with three kills in four attempts while recording 10 digs.

Valentine's stats for the week: two matches, six sets, 55 assists, six kills, one attack error, eight attempts, .625 hitting percentage, 12 digs, two service aces and a block assist for 8.5 points. For the two matches, she assisted on 76 percent of GW's 72 kills as GW swept both matches in the tournament.

GW (5-2) next travels to Morgantown, WV, Friday to face UMBC (8-3) at 5:00 p.m. in the West Virginia Invitational before facing UNC Greensboro (6-3) Saturday at noon followed by the host Mountaineers (2-5) at 8:00 p.m.
