
WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 16) - GW concluded the American Classic with a determined 3-1 victory over stubborn Purdue by the scores, 10-15, 15-3, 15-11, 15-5, Saturday at American Universitys Bender Arena. It marked the first meeting in volleyball between the schools.
Senior Renee Arnold had her best match of the season for the Colonials by putting away 23 kills in 57 attacks with just five errors for a .316 hitting percentage. She also had a strong defensive showing with a match-high 16 digs, a block solo and a service ace. As a result, Arnold was named to the seven-member All-Tournament team along with Colonials teammate, Jill Levey. Levey registered 55 assists, 11 digs and surprised the Boilermakers with five kills in eight attacks. She did not commit an attack error in the tournament.
After dropping the first game of the match, the Colonials roared back to hit .381 in game two to dominate the Boilermakers, 15-3. Game four began with several side-outs before either team got on the scoreboard but it was the Colonials who pulled away decisively as the match approached the two-hour mark.
Tracee Browns 18 kills and two block solos complemented another strong performance by setter Jill Levey. Suzana Manole and Julie Jahnke were good for 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Manole added 13 digs.
Julie Doud led the Boilermakers with 20 kills and 15 digs. Purdue, which came to Washington with a 8-1 mark, went 0-3 in the nations capital following setbacks to American Friday and NC State and GW Saturday.
GW (8-2) open Atlantic 10 Conference play Wednesday night at Smith Center when it hosts defending A-10 champion Temple at 7:00 p.m.
