GW Volleyball Travels to Loyola (Md.) Wednesday Night

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team will conclude its non-conference schedule Wednesday night when it attempts to snap its five-match losing streak against Loyola (Md.) at Reitz Arena in Baltimore.

GW (10-5, 0-2 A-10) opened the 2011 campaign with 10 consecutive wins, its best start to a season since 2003, but has dropped five straight matches dating back to Sept. 16. The Colonials opened the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule with losses at Duquesne and Saint Louis last weekend.
Loyola (5-11, 2-2 MAAC) snapped a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Saint Peter's on Sunday. The Greyhounds are led offensively by a trio of student-athletes that have registered 100+ kills on the season in Tina Catanach (181), Jac Bullock (126) and Faye Lukas (122). Lauren Andersen paces the offense with 530 assists, while Mindy Maloney (38 blocks) and Elena Frac (139 digs) anchor the defensive end.
For the Colonials, junior setter Katie Crosby ranks second in the Atlantic 10 with 552 assists and third with 10.43 assists per set. Leading the offense is junior Lauren Whyte, who ranks second in the conference with 3.92 kills per set and third with 192 kills overall. Sophomore Taylor Knox (103 kills, 28 block assists) and freshman Kelsey Newman (105 kills, .261 attack percentage) support Whyte in the attack.
Defensively, junior libero Candace Silva-Martin leads the A-10 with 5.02 digs per set and ranks second with 246 digs while sophomore Jamie Armstrong leads the team with 44 blocks (four solo, 40 assist).
GW will return to conference play Saturday night when it hosts Charlotte at the Charles E. Smith Center at 7 p.m.
