Oct. 26, 2009
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- GW freshman Candace Silva-Martin (Fremont, CA/Harker School) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Silva-Martin shares this week's awards with Xavier's Stephanie Vorherr. It marks the fourth and fifth A-10 weekly awards for Silva-Martin who earlier garnered co-Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors Sept. 14. The Colonials' libero, Silva-Martin earned the honors after she totalled 57 digs in helping lead GW to a 2-1 record in three matches last week. She averaged 5.18 digs per set including a match-high 30 digs in GW's 3-2 victory over Xavier Friday. The victory over Xavier snapped a seven-match losing skid to the Musketeers dating back to the 2003 season. Silva-Martin leads the A-10 in digs-per-set average with 5.16. Silva-Martin's stats for the week: three matches, 11 sets, 57 digs (5.18 digs per set), four assists and three service aces for three points. GW (18-8, 5-4 A-10) next hosts Temple (10-8, 6-3 A-10) Friday night in a 7 p.m. match at Smith Center.
