Oct. 30, 2017

WASHINGTON - George Washington volleyball freshman Sydney Welch was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on Monday following a record-setting performance over the weekend while teammate Kristel Moor was honored as the American Volleyball Scouting Report (AVSR) Player of the Week.

Welch put forth a record-setting defensive effort for GW and was a key factor in the Colonials' two crucial wins. The award is the first weekly honor of her career from the Atlantic 10.

In Friday's win over Duquesne, Welch totaled 34 digs which is a new single-match GW record for a four-set contest. The previous record was 32 by both GW Athletic Hall of Famer Sarah Hokom (2002) and Jessica Vesey (2004).

The Louisville, Kentucky, native continued her stellar defensive play on Saturday by leading the Colonials with 16 digs in a 3-1 win over La Salle. For the week she averaged a robust 6.25 digs per set.

Moor was an offensive force for the Colonials, totaling 30 kills across the two matches to earn Player of the Week honors form the AVSR, which identifies the top performances from international student-athletes each week.

The Viljandi, Estonia, native finished with 10 kills and a career-high 11 digs on Friday evening for her first career double-double in GW's 3-1 win over Duquesne. The hot hitting continued into Saturday as Moor swung .415 with 20 kills, along with five block assists, to lead the Colonials past La Salle.
