NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington senior libero Candace Silva-Martin has been named the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week following her record-setting weekend, the league announced on Monday.
It marks the first A-10 weekly honor of the season for Silva-Martin and the fifth of her career. The Fremont, Calif., native totaled 54 digs in this past weekend's matches to become the Atlantic 10's all-time digs leader.
Silva-Martin, who entered the weekend needing 30 digs to pass La Salle's Carolyn Judge ('06) for the league record, totaled 18 in Friday's 3-0 sweep of Fordham. On Sunday, she played one of the best matches of her career, totaling a career-high 36 digs to pass Judge and bring her career total to 2,105.
Silva-Martin now holds the Atlantic 10 career digs record, GW's career digs record and the top three spots on GW's single-season digs list.
For the week, she averaged 6.75 digs per set in addition to six assists (0.75/set) and four service aces (0.50/set).
